Thank you Helen. I will fix that, my information comes from a hand written document that is hard to read and the writer is deceased so…..

Bob – I assume that the burial information is for Gerhard not Herman. John Herman was buried in Dyersville, Dubuque County, Iowa in February 1915. Thank you for the Hulsing name. That is what i suspected. I thought that Dusing/Dusling was unlikely. I do have that 1870 census record for Herman. What I have been completely unable to find is an immigration record of any sort. Very puzzling. If he did not immigrate with Gerhard, when did he come?

It appears as if “Herman Ensteter” was working as a farm laborer just a farm or two away from Gerhard Huelsing in 1870 in Liberty Twp, Dubuque Co, IA. The Erdmann family lived nearby too. You might want to reach out to the Huelsing families on ancestry.com but it according to the cemetery records for Iowa he was born Oct 10, 1823 and died 21 Oct 1911 and is buried at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Carroll Co.

Perhaps Karin can help confirm the Huelsing family connection in Germany?

I can add this information to your search. In the state archives in Osnabrück, the emigration records note the following: File “Rep 350 Lin Nr. 562″ has this info:

4. Anstöter, Johann Theodor, Kötter

7. New Vienna/Iowa

10. Seine Schwester Anna lebt in New Vienna, von ihr ist ein
Brief vom 24.03.1869

Thus, it notes that Gerhard Heinrich was born Dec 5, 1851 and that he emigrated on July 3, 1869 with New Vienna, Iowa as his destination. It further notes that his sister, Anna, lives in New Vienna and that a letter arrived from her on March 24, 1869.

There is also another emigration file for Gerhard Heinrich, namely Rep 335, Nr. 807:
1. Anstöter, Gerhard Heinrich
2. 15.12.1851, Hummeldorf Pf Salzbergen A Lin
3. ?
4. Anstöter, Theodor, Kötter, Hummeldorf und
Anstöter, weibl., geb. Hülsing, Holsten

10. Ist der 2. Sohn. Vaters Schwester ist im Staat Iowa
verheiratet. In ihrer Nähe wohnen die Gebrüder

This notes his birth as December 15 and provides additional info on his parents noting he left on June 25, 1869. It further indicates that he is the second son and
that his father’s sister is married and living in Iowa and living near her are
the Hülsing brothers.

I presume these must be his mother’s relations – possibly his uncles.

Hope this helps provide some additional meat to the bones for your family’s
history.

Hello! My gggrandmother, Margaret Connett, married an Asa Asher on 12 Dec 1869 Jasper IA. her name was given as Margaret Conssett. She was enumerated Jasper IA in 1870, shown as the head of household, and no husband shown. Margaret Gilliland Connett was born 4 sep 1817 and was first married to Isaac Connett, on 24 Aug 1837 in Logan, OH
My query is this: who is this Asa Asher? The IA census records confused me. But your timelines intrigued me and a ray of hope was produced. I hope you can point me in the right direction. You show an Asa in Allen KS at this time (1869). Do you have a list of the household, wife, children?
Speculation: a couple, widow and perhaps widower, joined together but could not make a go of it. Or something else happened – perhaps this Asa passed away. Enough.

There’s a lot of research that’s gone on here!

We have been trying to trace our American ancestor, Allan Asher born TX 1809, back to where he came from – without success (he died in London 1856). I wondered if you would be interested in having a quick look at my website above which tells you a bit about Allan. Have you come across an Allan/Allen in your TX Asher research? I can’t help thinking he must have left a paper trail as he was obviously rather wealthy for the time.
