Your really hit pay dirt. I found your blog while looking for Rulon/McClellan info. My husband is related to James McLeland.
Did you ever contact Illa McClellan Bolton who wrote a book on the family?
I see you are a librarian. I am a retired librarian.

Hey Tom – sorry I haven’t gotten back to you sooner. I do have a bit on John Herman and Gerhardt’s parents. It is in pdf file from a researcher in Germany. I think it only adds one generation. I’ll get it up on the blog today.

Hi, this is Richard’s cousin Tom. Do you by any chance have John Herman Anstoeter and Gerhard Anstoeter’s parents names or go any farther back in Germany? I see that there are some Anstöters in Germany and it would be interesting to find out how we are related to them.

Thanks for touching base. The Internet has made the world much smaller. If you go to my website http://www.mcwieser.info you can see pictures of your Anstoetter cousins! They are a numerous clan and in no danger of “daughtering our” unlike my own family name. I would love to exchange some information. Give me a few weeks to get through this remodel and I’ll send you some thing on John Herman’s families.

I too am descended from the Anstöter’s of Hummeldorf, descended from the Anna Adelheid Anstöter Ovel you refer to above.

I’ve also worked with Karin. She’s done a great deal of work linking the families of the old and new worlds. She was most helpful and sent pictures of an exhibition of the Salzbergen auswanders, an event put on by her Society. Karin had also sent to me and a couple of my cousins scans of some letters written by my gg-aunt in Osceola Co, Iowa, who had sent letters to her relatives in Germany. It was amazing that Karin came into possession of them. The world really is quite small.

I had never learned before, though, of the origins of the name, Anstöter. Thanks for that.

I’ve tried WeRelate but ultimately I think I’ll end up with a private wiki on the Ning platform. As a collaborative tool I prefer to to the messy stuff off the public Internet. Ning allows you to invite others to work with you and has an awesome toolkit for forums, slideshows etc. Not designed for genealogists but worth investigating. WeRelate and Geni are both interesting but not as customizable or perhaps as private as I would like – yet.

Have you visited WeRelate yet? This is a fabulous site showing just how useful a wiki can be for collaborative family research. It's a work in progress so you also have influence on how it develops. Because it is so different from any genealogy system we've used before, it does have a learning curve. It is well worth the effort.
