Sarah Jane never married and while she was often called upon by her sister and brothers to be a household assistant during her younger days she eventually went to secretarial school and became an executive secretary in the offices of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers in Kansas City, Kansas. She retired from their offices about 1940 and went to live first in Kansas City, Missouri and then in Pleasanton, Kansas with her great nephew Robert G. McLeland and his wife Carolyn.She died at age 97 in 1967 and is buried in Pleasanton.
